Literature on the collapse of Enron revolve around false reporting and Special Purpose Entities (SPEs) as the causes of the collapse.
A closer analysis shows that the disease Enron had was Success Obsession and failure to uphold ethics. The failure to report losses and the creation of SPEs accelerated their fall.
Their innovation efforts and programs were exemplary and Fortune Magazine was right in ranking them the most innovative company in the US. The company was a darling of Wall Street.
Enron declared bankruptcy on December 2,2001.
